Thought for the Day: Untitled

If a painting is labeled "Untitled", is it actually untitled, or is the title "Untitled" a title, thus negating the title? And aren't artists a pretentious, stupid bunch?

When I was a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Post-It Notes(TM) had yet to be invented, but if you sprayed a little adhesive on the back of a small piece of peper you could stick them anywhere, including untitled masterworks in the museum upstairs. The only title I remember was "First Twinge of a Killer Heart Attack." But the guards kept taking them down. Finally a friend made a sign that looked more real than mine, and his stayed up much longer.

Another time we stood on the big stairs under the skylights and asked people at random if they'd ablige us by taking their clothes off while we take a few pictures. Nobody obliged. And I wouldn't do it. But we tried.

Growing up artistic made me all that I am, and am not, today. I still take my clothes off, but I don't associate the act with art anymore.
